Tormis Choral Festival
On November 6, 2010, nine amateur choirs from different cities in the Netherlands will come to the Boomkerk of Amsterdam to perform a capella choral music of the twentieth century's most important choral composer - from Estonia, Veljo Tormis. This event is open to the public and will take place from 15:00-20:00. It honors two important milestone years: Tormis's 80th birthday, and the 99th year of the Boomkerk's existence. Organized by ExArt under the leadership of Hebe de Champeaux, this festival has the goal of bringing hundreds of choir members together from all corners of the Netherlands in an exchange of ideas, presentation, and inspiration. In addition to the choral performances, two speakers are invited to give presentations on Estonian cultural history and Estonian poetry: Prof. dr. Cornelius Hasselblatt from the Faculteit der Letteren / Finoegristiek in Gronigen, and Prof. Triinu Ojamaa, an Estonian musicologist. In addition, an art exhibition of Estonian artist Urmo Raus will displayed in the adjoining building of the church. Traditional Estonian beer and snacks will also be available for purchase. Veljo Tormis himself will be travelling from Estonia to attend the festival. We will be conducting an open interview with him at the end of the presentations. The festival will conclude with all participating choirs singing a new publication of Tormis's work "Meile antakse"-"We are given"
